QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

·         Associate degree preferably from an Interpreter Training Program, and

·         Minimum of 2 year’s experience interpreting, OR

·         5 years interpreting experience may be accepted, OR

·         Temporary License from the KY Board of Interpreters (KBI); and actively working with a mentor to achieve full licensure, OR

·         Full license from the KY Board of Interpreters (KBI)

 

Knowledge Of:

·                  American Sign Language, Signed English, Signed Exact English, and/or other recognized modes

             of communication used within the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing community

·                  Correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary

·                  Basics of Core Content/curriculum  

·                  Values, behavior, and language of the American Deaf culture

·                  Legal rights of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing

·                  Interpreter Code of Ethics 

 

Job Summary:

Apply ASL interpreting, English transliterating and/or other communication modalities in the educational environment to ensure access to information and maximize learning between students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, and faculty, staff, and other students.

 

Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities:

·                  Attend and interpret the educational environment including but not limited to classrooms,

             labs, field trips, assemblies, sports practices/competitions, school-sponsored extracurricular  

               ceremonies, all other educational opportunities provided to students.

·                  Encourage deaf and hard-of-hearing students to communicate with faculty, staff,

             administrators, students, and others.

·                  Prepare for course material as necessary for successful interpreting and/or transliterating.

·                  Work independently with little or no direction.

·                  Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

·                  Relate well to deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.

·                  Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.

·                  Provide instructional staff with relevant information regarding student’s functional abilities in 

             the classroom.

·                  Maintain regular attendance.

·                  Assists certified persons in implementing all policies and regulations governing student.

             conduct for the classroom and related school activities. 

·                  Acts in accordance with the by-laws and policies as set forth by the Daviess County Board of

             Education, KRS and KAR, and applicable Federal laws and regulations.

·                  Demonstrates loyalty and dedication to the purposes and goals of the Daviess County Public

             Schools.

·                  Perform other duties as assigned.
