QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • High school diploma, G.E.D. certificate, or satisfactory progress toward G.E.D.
  • Demonstrates competent language and computer skills.
  • Has demonstrated ability to work with children in an organized setting including some experience in a library setting.
  • Participates in program training as specified by the Kentucky Department of Education and local district.
  • Has met requirements for a criminal records check as specified by Kentucky state law and other requirements as specified in district personnel policy.
  • Must demonstrate and/or develop skills to operate office and educational equipment.
  • Must be able to lift boxes or stacks of books up to 40 lbs.

JOB GOAL:

 

To help provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning library environment in which teachers and students can take advantage of available resources.

 

CRITICAL SKILLS/EXPERTISE REQUIRED:

 

                KNOWLEDGE OF:

 

  • Basic computer skills including navigation of websites, operation of keyboard and mouse.
  • Methods, practices, terminology and procedures used in a library.
  • Basic record-keeping techniques.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

                ABILITY TO:

 

  • Assist with library activities.
  • Process and shelve library materials and assist students and staff in the selection of library materials.
  • Learn the operation, policies, procedures and methods of an assigned school library.
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide quickly and accurately.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Communicate effectively with children and adults.
  • Maintain routine records as assigned.
  • File alphabetically and numerically with speed and accuracy.
  • Utilize materials for marking, mending, or protecting library materials.
  • Operate office equipment including typewriter, computer and copier as required.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Under the supervision of the librarian:

 

  • Types and processes orders, reports, bibliographies, forms, library schedules, letters to publishers, catalog cards, etc., where applicable.
  • Helps to order and receives books selected for purchases by the librarian.
  • Helps to maintain files of catalog cards, vertical file material, publishers’ catalogs, etc.
  • Writes notices concerning overdue books and collects fines for such books.

 

  • Makes simple repairs on damaged books and processes more severely damaged book for repair at the bindery.
  • Monitors attendance in the library and helps keep attendance records.
  • Processes books for reserve on teachers’ requests and maintains the reserve shelf.
  • Prepares current magazines for shelving and maintains neat displays.
  • Assists in the inventory of library materials and preparation of lists of missing books and books to be discarded.
  • Shelves incoming books.
  • Helps to maintain current inventory of supplies and suggests items for acquisition as needed.
  • Oversees the general neatness and attractiveness of the library and its displays.
  • Helps students locate reference and other instructional materials.
  • Reads to small groups of students (in elementary school libraries only).
  • Assists the librarian in maintaining proper student discipline.
  • Delivers materials, audio-visual equipment, and messages to classroom teachers as appropriate.
  • Participates in appropriate in-service activities provided by the district.
  • Performs other tasks as the librarian and/or principal may assign.
  • Assists certified persons in implementing all policies and regulations governing student conduct for the classroom and related school activities.
  • Acts in accordance with the by-laws and policies as set forth by the Daviess County Board of Education, KRS and KAR, and applicable Federal laws and regulations.
  • Performs other duties that may not be specifically covered in this general job description as assigned by the supervising teacher and/or principal.
  • Demonstrates loyalty and dedication to the purposes and goals of the Daviess County Public Schools.
